HOW IT CAME TO BE...

Vito Pelligrini and Sammy Goldberg, returning WWII veterans, were raising families and working in the heart of Bronx, NY. Vito, a butcher, who owned the corner butcher shop and Sammy, a NYC fireman from the firehouse two blocks down. Sammy, the firehouse cook, had made more than a few trips to Vito’s corner butcher store for the finest homemade Italian sausage , hand-sliced chicken cutlets and freshly ground beef.

Vito and Sammy also form a friendship as they attend their children’s school activities, sporting events, and get-togethers with the guys at the local pub.

As the years pass, Sammy finds himself with a shoulder injury as a result of a fire-fighting incident, and he goes into early retirement. Meanwhile, Vito is feeling competition from the supermarkets and fears that he will have to close his small corner butcher shop.

One day Sammy says to Vital, “We gotta find a way to make some money”, as they both have family responsibilities and bills to pay. Vito replies, “my father always said, ‘if you want to make some dough, get into the pizza business’.”

So VITO GOLDBERG’S PIZZERIA is born - a neighborhood pizza joint in the Bronx, NY. It is an unpretentious place known for great hot pizza, over-stuffed heroes (New York-ese for hoagie/sub/grinder sandwiches) and ice-cold draft beer. It becomes a neighborhood gathering spot.

We, who represent the son of one of the founders, and the two grandsons of both, are honored and proud to carry on their legacy.
